A curly octopus haircut from the Wigs & Warpaint archive

Getting more from your natural curls

There is no single routine for every head of curly hair. The shape of your cut, the amount of moisture and hold you like, and how you dry your hair all make a difference. At Wigs & Warpaint in Sheffield, we start by asking how you actually wear your curls and what you want to change.

Start with your wash routine

Cleanse your scalp gently and let the lather run through the lengths. Work conditioner through the areas that need it, then detangle carefully while the hair has slip. Ask your stylist how often to wash based on your own scalp, hair and routine rather than following a fixed rule.

Style while the hair is damp

Apply your chosen styling product evenly through damp hair. Scrunch or shape the curls to encourage the finish you like, and avoid repeatedly brushing them out as they dry. Our own Curl Creme offers a softer finish; Sculpting Glaze offers more hold. Your stylist can demonstrate how much to use and whether either suits your hair.

Dry and refresh without losing the shape

Air-drying works for some curls. If you prefer a diffuser, use a comfortable heat and airflow setting and support sections of hair as you dry, rather than constantly moving them around. On another day, a little water and your usual styling product may help refresh the shape. The right approach depends on how your hair responds.

A cut that works with your texture

A curly cut considers your hair’s density, movement and how much it springs up. Bring photographs and tell us which length you want to keep. We offer curly haircuts for women and men; if you want to create curls in naturally straighter hair, ask for a perm consultation with Claire or Jing Yu instead of booking a curly haircut.
