Know Your Curl Type
Understanding your curl pattern is the first step to loving your hair. At Wigs & Warpaint in Sheffield, our curly hair specialists work with every texture, and the right cut, colour and routine all start with knowing what you're working with. Curls are usually grouped into three families, with sub-types in each.
Type 2: Waves
Loose, S-shaped waves that fall somewhere between straight and curly. 2A is a fine, barely-there wave; 2B has more definition through the mid-lengths; 2C is a defined wave that starts higher at the root and can be prone to frizz.
Type 3: Curls
Springy, defined curls with a clear loop. 3A curls are loose and shiny; 3B are tighter, with more volume; 3C are tight corkscrews packed densely together. Type 3 curls love moisture and hate being brushed dry.
Type 4: Coils
Tight coils and zig-zags with the most volume and the most need for moisture. 4A has a defined coil, 4B bends in sharp angles, and 4C is the tightest pattern with the most shrinkage. Gentle handling and rich conditioning are key.
It's Not Just the Pattern: Porosity & Density
Two other things shape your routine. Porosity is how well your hair absorbs and holds moisture (low-porosity hair takes longer to wet and dry; high-porosity soaks up product fast but loses it quickly). Density is simply how much hair you have. Together with your curl type, these decide which products and techniques actually work for you.
